About the Pacific Islands News Association (PINA)

New PINA Executive Board 2007 - 2009 
 
The PINA convention was held in Honiara, Solomon Islands in May 2007. At the Retreat, on beautiful Maravangi Resort, just off the capital, Honiara, a new Board was elected. 
 
The Chief Executive Officer of the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) of Papua New Guinea, Joseph Ealedona was elected President to replace Fiji Television’s Ken Clark, who did not seek another term.

Jonas Cullwick, a retired media executive from Vanuatu was elected as Vice President.

Industry Board Members are:

Radio Representative – Matai Akauola (News Director – FBCL)

Print – Moses Stevens (Publisher of Ni Vanuatu newspaper)

Television – Antoine Malsungai – TV Executive (Vanuatu Radio & TV)

National Associations – Cherelle Jackson (News Editor Samoa Newsline)

What is PINA?

PINA is the main professional association of the Pacific Islands news media. It links radio and TV stations, newspapers, magazines, online services, national associations of news media practitioners and journalism school in 23 Pacific Island countries and territories.

PINA is an NGO in official relations with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). PINA is also the Pacific Island member of IFEX, the global network of freedom of expression and media freedom organizations, and also a member of the Council of Asia and Pacific Press Institute (CAPPI).

In November 2004, PINA officially merged with PIBA (Pacific Islands Broadcasting Association) to become the only voice of the regional media in the Pacific.

What does PINA stand for?

PINA’s main objectives, as outlined in the constitution are:

1. Promoting and defending freedom of expression and information 
2. Promoting and developing professional standards through training and education 
3. Promoting and developing professional fellowship and cooperation.

What does PINA do?

- run between 30-40 training activities a year through its PINA Pacific Journalism Development Centre 
- develops training and resource materials, and encourage exchange of information and skills with industry members in the PICs. 
- operates a daily news service, PACNEWS , with 3 bulletins and one regional summary daily, the most widely used news service in the Pacific Islands and supported by all PINA members and associates. 
- operates the PINA Pacific Freedom of Expression and information and defends media freedom in the Pacific Islands. 
- Promote good governance through dissemination of accurate information to Pacific Island Countries (PICs) 
- Relationship building with NGOs, donors, and regional organization in strengthening coverage of their work programs in the development of PICs. 
 
How is PINA governed?

PINA is governed by an executive board elected by the members during the general assembly held at regional PINA conventions every two years. Day to day running of PINA is the responsibility of the PINA staff based in Suva, Fiji.
